Dating App Tinder Offers a Whopping 37 Gender Identity Options
Tired of boring, binary gender options on your dating app? Lucky for you, Tinder has added dozens of new gender preferences!
The dating app, which boasts over 20 billion “friendships, marriages, relationships,” now offers 37 gender identity options. You read that right, 37 options! Among the selections listed are “transgender female,” “transsexual male,” “agender” and genderqueer.” And if 37 is still too few, Tinder now includes the possibility of writing in your own gender term.
Tinder CEO Sean Rad worked with GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) and transgender Tinder users after reports that the transgender community had been experiencing some harassment on the platform, USA Today reported.
“Gender is a complex conversation—it’s an ongoing dialogue,” Rad stated, referencing Tinder’s progress on the matter.
GLAAD Director of Transgender Affairs Nick Adams called the move “an important step forward (and) a message to its tens of millions of users that transgender and gender non-conforming people are welcome.”
A video posted by Tinder titled, “#AllTypesAllSwipes: Introducing More Genders on Tinder,” featured various “transgender and gender non-conforming people” as well as representatives from Tinder explaining past problems with the app and the importance of the gender identity additions. “Everyone has the right to be who they are,” the video asserted.
Adams added that the Tinder update now allows people to “self-identify in more expansive and encompassing ways.” And what better way to “truly reflect who you really are” than with a phone app fill-in bar. {eoa}
