Former Cosmo Writer: Why These Ideas of Women’s ‘Liberation’ Are Wrong
Sue Ellen Browder, a pro-life family feminist and author of Subverted, praised clothing retailer Land’s End decision to issue a statement yesterday apologizing for its controversial decision to feature an interview with prominent abortion activist Gloria Steinem in its spring magazine after it received numerous complaints from pro-life customers.
“Lands End executives did exactly the right thing,” said Browder. “A view of women’s ‘liberation’ that turns a woman into a sex object who ‘needs’ abortion to be free (as pro-abortion feminists like Steinem continually claim) is a false freedom that denies a woman’s full personhood.”
The magazine emphasized Steinem’s efforts to pass an Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), which could expand abortion in the United States.
“Steinem, in her misguided form of feminism, needs to stop promoting abortion and start promoting authentic feminism,” Browder said. “The ERA was defeated in this country for good reason. A mother’s rights and her baby’s rights are not separate and isolated from each other. Human rights are indivisible.”
Browder added: “There’s a difference between equality and equity. For far too long, pro-abortion feminists like Steinem have been promoting equality between men and women, when, in fact, authentic feminism is a fight for equity at home and in the public square. Men and women are not the same, and we need to honor our complementary differences.”
