Franklin Graham Blasts Donald Trump for Kim Davis Comments
Kim Davis remains behind bars for refusing to issue same-sex marriage licenses. Franklin Graham was quick to note that this ripple effect is exactly what many feared would result from the Supreme Court’s June ruling.
Graham immediately came out in support of Davis, arguing that, as Americans, our Constitution guarantees religious freedom, which means we should be able to live out our faith in our daily lives. He called for Christians everywhere to pray for her.
Trump had a different opinion, though, and the businessman-turned-politician’
“Donald J. Trump said that #KimDavis should follow ‘the law of the land.’ He should know that just because something is made into a law, doesn’t make it right,” Graham wrote in a Facebook post.
Graham went on to note Trump’s Scottish Presbyterian ancestors may have been among those who “had their heads cut off” because they refused to recognize the king of England as head of the church.
“They believed that Jesus Christ was the head of the church, not the king of England; and they stood for—and died for—those sincerely held religious beliefs. Our forefathers gave us freedom of religion at a great cost, and that was meant for us to be able to live out our faith in our daily lives, at home and at work,” Graham wrote.
“That’s what Kim Davis is trying to do today—live out her faith. The Supreme Court did not have the right or the authority to redefine marriage. Big mistake.”
