A worship leader at one of Charlotte’s largest churches is recovering after being viciously attacked and robbed by a home intruder.

Matt Bentley worship leader at the Forest Hill Church, walked in on the burglary Wednesday afternoon. The burglar stabbed Bentley four times on the arms, side and face before driving off with the pastor’s vehicle.

“He just kind of bum-rushed him, kind of swinging, asking for keys, wallet, phones, etc.,” Bentley’s roommate, Hudson Hower told WSOC-TV.

None of the wounds were life-threatening, and Bentley was released from the hospital Thursday morning.

“He’s in good spirits,” church Communications Director Stacey Martin, told WSOC. “He’s glad that the injuries aren’t any worse than they were.”

Martin said news of the attack spread rapidly after Bentley told a church colleague, and people from across the church’s community began to pray.

“So he’s being loved on, cared for well, being covered in prayer,” Martin said.

Meanwhile, police arrested 25-year-old Corey Edgerton hours after the attack.

Prison records show that Edgerton served two years for a break-in in another county and was also wanted by probation officers.

Police charged Edgerton with robbery with a dangerous weapon, breaking and entering, assault with serious bodily injury.

He was scheduled to make his first court appearance in the case on Thursday. {eoa}
