Opinion: Why Aren’t More Pro-Life Groups Interceding Daily at the Supreme Court Against Roe v. Wade?

In 1946, Martin Niemoller, while reflecting on how the raise of Nazism was directly due to the failure of most people to act courageously, said, “First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.”

A longtime reporter at the Supreme Court was recently asked if there had been any believers in front of the Supreme Court standing up for life. He said, “You guys always lose because you never show up—the other side always wins because they always show up.”

It could not be put more starkly, as most believers would be shocked to know that, with a few occasional exceptions, even at this pivotal moment of the pro-life stance there are only a tiny handful—two or three, and sometimes just one—standing for life in front of the Supreme Court.

As a witness here in Washington, D.C., many pro-life organizations have shown up to make a stance at the Supreme Court, but not regularly. However, there is one in particular that is showing up—believe it or not, it’s a leftist group called the Progressive Anti-Abortion Uprising, and a single woman, a longtime Washington resident, shows up almost daily with her signs.

The woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, says of the crucial, transforming upcoming High Court decision, “We believe the decision has already been made and there is no reason to be out there, as we believe Roe will be overturned.” To the even more disconnected, “It is too dangerous for us to be there.”

As hard as it is to believe, this is the reality of the daily stand for life in front of the Supreme Court, even at this critical juncture. Sadly, there is a very real possibility that the purpose of the leak was precisely to mobilize opposition to threaten the justices personally so that the preliminary decision advanced by Justice Alito will be, in fact, overruled.

As Niemoller stated about the rise of Nazism and the longtime Supreme Court reporter commented on the near-complete lack of believers standing for principle, the real reason that so many critical issues fall one by one is evil itself, which of course grows if unchecked by the kingdom of God.

If Roe is not overturned, or in fact a rejection of it outright occurs, it will not be because of the massive, nationwide abortionist rallies and the pressure on the justices to switch their votes. It will be the failure of believers—particularly the legacy, historic “pro-life” organizations that have abandoned the front lines and joined the “Christian Swamp” (no different than the regular “swamp”), people who have been doing it so long that, if Roe were miraculously overturned, would no longer have a cause.

The stark reality is that if Roe v. Wade is overturned, multiple legacy organizations will no longer be able to organize, fundraise and operate as they have for 50 years. As hard as it is to believe, it may very well be a reason for their near-complete failure to have a daily presence just a short walk from their various headquarters in Washington.

There is still a limited window of time for believers to descend on the Supreme Court. If you wish to participate, send an email to [email protected] to receive information. If the church fails to mobilize, as Niemoller warned, the worst could very well happen.

There is a strong possibility that Roe will not be overturned, and the blood will be on the hands of not only the abortionists but also the legacy pro-life organizations and individual believers who don’t show up. It will bring to light the very simple fact that if we refuse to be the “salt” of the earth, it will rot.

If we fail to stand up when our very freedom and that of our babies is at stake, we do not deserve that freedom.

“You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet” (Matt. 5:13, ESV). {eoa}
