America’s top diplomat in Israel said on Thursday that cooperation between Israel and the U.S. on Iran is “extraordinarily close.”

“There is no issue that we coordinate more closely on [than] Iran,” said U.S. Ambassador to Israel Dan Shapiro at a press conference.

The U.S., Israel and other Western countries believe that Iran aims to produce nuclear weapons through its civilian nuclear program.

Rhetoric regarding Iran has been heating up during the last two months, with speculation on the rise that Israel might soon mount an attack against Iran’s nuclear facilities.

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Martin Dempsey said recently that it wasn’t clear if Israel would warn the U.S. in advance of military action against Iran.

Shapiro down played those claims.

He was quoted as saying that a nuclear Iran is “a real threat to Israeli security, ours and our allies’, and that is why we are determined to prevent this from happening.”

The Jerusalem Post and Ha’aretz contributed to this report.
