Liberal Christian, ‘USA Today’ Columnist Wonders Why She Has to Defend Her Faith

Liberal Christian and USA Today columnist Connie Schultz published a piece on July 9 titled, “Defending my faith puts me in a mood.” The overall scope and tone of the writing is one of incredulous unbelief. Schultz is lamenting that she is now forced to defend even her version of Christianity to her progressive friends.

A liberal Christian is shocked. The rest of us are shaking our heads.

Schultz does not merely bemoan the fact that she is finding herself on the defensive, regardless of her many progressive Christian credentials. She concludes her piece by saying, “We are not creating the country we claim we want if it becomes perilous for progressive Christians to share their faith.”

Interesting claim.

Schultz obviously thought her version of progressive Christianity would be off-limits to the cancel culture mob. It seems she thought that if she accepted the major tenets of wokeism, she could conceal the fact that her organized religion had anything to do with the person of Jesus Christ.

But the wokeism cult will not cohabit with Christianity, regardless of whether that Christianity is woke or progressive or otherwise. I refer to wokeism as a cult because it makes moral claims that supersede one’s ability to hold fast to religious beliefs that may contradict it.

The wokeism cult says you cannot claim to be a Christian and a good moral person if you insist that the Bible’s claims on human sexuality are true. If you do not accept that individuals may choose to identify as a man or a woman or as a magical unicorn, then you are a bigot. And bigots are bad people. Therefore, Christians are bad people.

This conversation will only go on so long until we realize there is no appeasing this woke mob.

Progressive Christians are deluding themselves. Thinking that you can go along to get along will only get you so far.

Schultz spends the majority of her article trying to bolster her progressive credentials.

In a July 4 Facebook post, she quoted the late Rev. William Sloane, “There are three kinds of patriots, two bad, one good. The bad ones are the uncritical lovers and the loveless critics. Good patriots carry on a lover’s quarrel with their country, a reflection of God’s lover’s quarrel with all the world.”

Schultz received flak due to her mention of God in the post. She has equated that to an assault on her Christianity.

The fact that a mere mention of God—without any further claim of lordship or even the exclusivity of Jesus Christ—would be equated with an attack on Christianity shows how far we have slid.

This is not an assault on Schult’s progressive Christianity.

This is an assault on anything and everything that has to do with God, the Bible, a Judeo-Christian worldview and anything else that would stand in the way of the wokeism cult.

This cult is operating in the same spirit as Nimrod, the ancient Babylonian king who consolidated power and used his people to accomplish his means (Gen. 11:1-9).

He desired to create a totalitarian government, mixing it with occultism in which followers would touch heaven through their own means.

Ultimately, God was unwilling to permit the antichrist spirit operating in Nimrod to be successful. He confused the people’s ability to communicate, which ended up in the scattering of the people groups.

That same Nimrod spirit, or antichrist spirit, is at work in the wokeism cult today. It is working to crush all opposition. Christianity is in opposition to that spirit.

As Christians living in America, we did not properly appraise the threat when these spirits, ideologies and worldviews began taking root in our nation. Those who held to biblical values and orthodox theologies concerning the sanctity of life and sanctity of marriage were the first to be assaulted.

We were painted as bigots and homophobes.

Today, even the progressive Christians are feeling the heat. They went along with heretical statements like “woman’s right to choose” and “love is love” thinking they could duck and take cover while still adhering to their form of Christianity.

I am shocked Schultz didn’t see this coming.

On behalf of the “nonprogressive, ordinary, Bible-believing” Christians who have been persecuted because of our beliefs, may I be the first to say to Schultz, “Welcome to the club.” {eoa}
