House GOP Staffer Makes Unexpected Announcement
Usually, if one plans to launch a successful third-party bid to defeat the Republican and Democratic presidential nominees—particularly just 92 days before the election—there are some requirements.
Among them:
- Name recognition
- A record of legislative or administrative success
- An enormous amount of money to overcome ballot and debate access issues
- An on-the-ground political operation working night and day to secure ballot access in all 50 states
Evan McMullin, the former chief policy director for the House Republican Conference, doesn’t have any of those boxes checked off. But, as a #NeverTrumper, he insists giving fellow anti-Donald Trump voters an option is “the right thing to do.”
“In a year where Americans have lost faith in the candidates of both major parties, it’s time for a generation of new leadership to step up,” he wrote in a brief statement to the media. “It’s never too late to do the right thing, and America deserves much better than either Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton can offer us. I humbly offer myself as a leader who can give millions of disaffected Americans a conservative choice for President.”
According to McMullin’s LinkedIn page, he’s never held elected office at any level. He’s a graduate of Brigham Young University and Trump’s alma mater, Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania.
He served 11 years as a CIA operations officer and as an investment banking associate with Goldman Sachs before going into public policy with the GOP. He’s also worked as a commercial fisherman and as a volunteer refugee resettlement officer of the U.N.
