This ‘Bible-Thumping Etiquette Teacher’ Is Voting ‘Guilt-Free’
Diann Catlin is a retired etiquette consultant and magazine editor, and the author of the book Whatever Happened to Nice? and, as she puts it in a recent op-ed for USA Today, she’s going to be voting “guilt free” on Nov. 8.
She first wrote:
I first encountered Donald Trump during the Republican Party primary debates. Night after night as he took on his opponents with vitriol and poorly chosen words, I would tell my husband, “I will NEVER vote for this man. He is simply Rude with a capital R.” I actually loved the night Sen. Marco Rubio dished it back, giving Trump a dose of boys-will-be-boys, and me a dose of front-seat boyish braggadocio.
But then, as she heard more about Trump’s actual positions on the issues, particularly immigration, trade and taxes, she began to reconsider her initial assessment. Then, as she considered the importance of selecting judges would be to the future of the country, she reconsidered even more.
Then, as she wrote:
But it was in listening to Gov. Mike Pence that I realized this Bible-thumping etiquette teacher could without guilt vote for the Trump-Pence ticket. Pence is a peach of a man, but clearly he was handpicked by Trump. Watching the vice presidential debate, I was engaged by a calm leader who would be able to bring quiet and reason to a normally contentious Senate. Trump could have selected anyone to fill the No. 2 spot. Great leaders show wisdom in team selection and I believe Trump’s experience in hiring will give him the discernment to select a team to indeed make America great again.
Noting that neither eloquence nor unworldliness will save “our cherished America,” she said “radical change” will be necessary—particularly after the last eight years under President Obama. Voting for Trump, Pence and the Republican platform—and the judicial appointments that will follow—will “bring exactly that.”
“But to make it happen, the etiquette police and evangelicals must put aside their reservations and vote—please.”
