Tony Perkins: This Is the Most Important Senate Vote in Your Lifetime

10th Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Neil Gorsuch

In a new fund-raising email to supporters on Wednesday, Family Research Council President Tony Perkins declared the impending vote to confirm the nomination of 10th Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court is “the most important Senate vote in your lifetime.”

FRC is attempting to raise $200,000 by Monday to fund its ongoing lobbying efforts on Capitol Hill. But in his call to action, Perkins explains why he believes the Gorsuch nomination is so critical to our nation’s future.

He wrote:

Nearly two months ago, I sat in the East Room of the White House watching American history change before my eyes.

I saw President Donald Trump nominate Judge Neil Gorsuch to the U.S. Supreme Court.

As I sat waiting I wondered, Will Christian freedoms and values survive in America? Or will they be crushed under the thumb of the U.S. Supreme Court?

To be fair, confirming Gorsuch would essentially restore the balance of the high court to where it was prior to the passing of the late Associate Justice Antonin Scalia. But Perkins said the next Supreme Court vacancy for President Donald Trump to fill could come as early as this summer.

Anthony Kennedy—often referred to as the court’s “swing vote”—is nearly 81 years old and, like Scalia, was appointed by President Ronald Reagan. The Trump administration has made several hints that they would like him to seriously consider retirement.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg—the “liberal lion” of the court—is more than three years older than Kennedy. While she’s in relatively good health, she’s also the third-longest serving member of the court behind Kennedy and Clarence Thomas.

In either case, liberals’ fight to “keep” that seat on the Supreme Court will make the Gorsuch confirmation seem like a picnic in the park by comparison.

FRC is mindful that it needs to gear up for an even more difficult fight when that opening—which will alter the balance of the court, perhaps for more than a generation—comes up. The fund-raising email makes it clear the organization plans to hold some funds in preparation for that future fight.

Perkins also wrote:

After Judge Gorsuch’s hearings last week, some are threatening to stall his nomination. We cannot let that happen, because too much is at stake. On April 3, the Senate Judiciary Committee is set to vote on whether to send Judge Gorsuch’s nomination to the full Senate for a vote …

Judge Neil Gorsuch is exactly the kind of Supreme Court justice we need.

Judge Gorsuch’s judicial philosophy rejects the judicial activism that has given us:

    • Abortion on demand,
    • Same-sex marriage,
    • Christian wedding vendors driven out of business,
    • Christian medical professionals forced to help bring about abortions and
    • Christian ministries facing crippling Obamacare fines if they don’t violate their faith.

That’s why the left is going all-out to smear him and kill his nomination.

He won the first fight by sailing through his confirmation hearings but getting through the Senate Judiciary Committee vote will be even harder. {eoa}
