Liberty Counsel Secures Student Victories for Unlawful Shot Mandate

Liberty Counsel has secured religious exemptions from the COVID-19 injection on behalf of more than 40 students after Loyola University originally denied their requests. All Loyola students who have contacted Liberty Counsel after their exemptions were wrongfully denied have now been granted exemptions and are allowed to remain enrolled for the fall semester.

If Loyola unenrolls any student who asked for a religious exemption, Liberty Counsel is prepared to file a lawsuit.

Liberty Counsel originally sent a demand letter in June on behalf of one student who had been denied a religious exemption. Then Liberty Counsel sent another demand letter on Aug. 4 on behalf of 11 students that the university shamefully denied their religious exemption requests. Loyola has continually threatened all students stating they must show their vaccination cards or receive approval for an exemption by Friday, Aug. 6, or they will not be enrolled in classes or have access to campus buildings for the fall semester.

All the students represented by Liberty Counsel submitted a written statement requesting a religious exemption, outlining their particular religious objections to the COVID-19 shots. The students objected based on the fetal cell line/abortion connection since each of the three injections available were either produced or tested with fetal cell lines that originated in elective abortions. These students did not want to be forced to choose between their faith and their education.

After Liberty Counsel gave the school a deadline of Aug. 5 to accept the students’ religious exemptions or face a lawsuit, the school finally complied and accommodated these 11 students. However, Loyola has continued to discriminate against other students and unlawfully deny their requests.

On Friday, Aug. 6, Liberty Counsel sent another demand letter on behalf of 10 additional students previously denied by Loyola. These students contacted Liberty Counsel after a press release was sent out on the previous day. By 4 p.m. that day, Loyola had reversed course and granted all 10 exemptions.

By 9:30 p.m. that same evening, another 10 students reached out who had been denied exemptions, and Liberty Counsel sent another demand letter to the school demanding a response by the afternoon of Monday, Aug. 9. During that weekend, another six students who were denied exemptions also contacted Liberty Counsel for help. On Monday morning, Liberty Counsel sent Loyola another letter, demanding exemptions for these students. Loyola responded and asked for an extra day to consider all these requests, and Liberty Counsel agreed.

As of Wednesday, Aug. 11, Loyola has now reversed its denials and has granted exemptions for more than 40 students. Any Loyola students who need legal assistance regarding the denial of their religious exemptions should contact Liberty Counsel immediately. {eoa}
