Faith Leaders, Christian Political Commentators Respond to Afghanistan Tragedy

Faith leaders from around the country are expressing their thoughts and prayers online for not only the 12 U.S. Marines killed in Afghanistan Thursday, but also for the other Americans still stranded there and the people of Afghanistan who cooperated with the American government.

Two suicide bombings near the Kabul Airport killed dozens and the terrorist group ISIS took responsibility for those actions. Here are the reactions from some of the top faith leaders in America surrounding Thursday’s deadly incident:

Billy Wilson, president of Oral Roberts University, tweeted:

“Our prayers are with the loved ones of our brave troops who lost their lives today, those who were wounded, and our nation who is grieving. We take comfort in the words of David in Psalm 34:18, ‘the Lord is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those who spirits are crushed.'”

Franklin Graham of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association tweeted:

“We are heartbroken to learn of the deaths of 12 U.S. military service members in explosions at the Kabul Airport today in Afghanistan. Our prayers and thoughts are with their families and loved ones. Also join me in praying for the many who are injured.”

Here are others who responded:

“What is happening in Afghanistan is catastrophic. The deaths are devastating and the chaos is inconceivable. I cannot fathom the level of fear and distress. The only thing I can imagine is what it’s like to be an American out here thinking for years on end, where are the wise?” —Beth Moore of Living Proof Ministries.

“Pray for the safety of our troops, christian missionaries, pastors, and all the innocent civilians caught in the middle of the disaster happening in Afghanistan. Ask God for Psalm 91 protection over each of their lives.—Jentezen Franklin, Free Chapel.

“Join us in praying for #Afghanistan. God, we pray today for the crisis taking place in Afghanistan. We know that so many vulnerable people—elderly, women, and children—are suffering. Today we ask for Your presence over the nation of Afghanistan and the city of Kabul.–International Fellowship of Christians and Jews.

“Let’s continue to pray for the Church in the Middle East! These are our brothers and sisters in Christ, and we won’t forget them!” —Marcus Lamb of Daystar TV.

“Please pray for our military and American and Afghan civilians.”—Jack Graham, pastor of Prestonwood Baptist Church in Plano, Texas.

“Trump would have had us out of Afghanistan three months ago with 0 casualties. FACT.” —Author and political commentator Brigitte Gabriel.

“We’ve spent two decades in Afghanistan only to leave behind drones, humvies, airplanes, weapons, armored personnel carriers and special forces gear for the Taliban. And, Biden says there’s no way this could have been avoided? —Political commentator Lance Wallnau.

Walker Wildmon, Vice President of Operations for the American Family Association, said in a release:

“We are deeply saddened by the tragic casualties of U.S. service members in Kabul, Afghanistan. “Within hours of learning of this tragedy we lowered our flag to half-staff at our national headquarters in Tupelo, Mississippi. While many questions remain unanswered, we must not forget to honor those who died protecting U.S. citizens and Afghan allies in Afghanistan.” {eoa}
