Paul, Augustine and Donald Trump
The presidential election is upon us, and we are being bombarded with claims and counterclaims about the candidates.
Donald Trump, in particular, has been a magnet for controversy since he began running for office. Even his supporters admit that he has flaws, and he often is his own worst enemy. Many people have chosen not to support him because of this.
Many cannot get past his past transgressions with women. How, they ask, can Christians support such an immoral person?

The answer goes back to a widely reported incident in the 2016 campaign when Trump prayed to receive Christ. Since then, he has been very supportive of Christianity and now credits God with saving his life during the assassination attempt. If you believe Trump is a Christian, his sins have been forgiven and he is a new man in Christ.

To those who raise Trump’s past sins, you may ask if they have quit reading the words of Paul and Augustine. After all, Paul persecuted Christians, and Augustine chased women. Yet when they converted to Christianity, God forgave them and used them mightily. If God can use them, He can also use Trump.
So, yes, a Christian may in good conscience vote for Trump despite his sinful past. He is a larger-than-life figure and has many well-publicized shortcomings, but the same can be said for all politicians. After all, we are not electing a pope.
Even so, there are Christians who may vote against Trump for other reasons, as is their right. In the end, you are accountable to God for how you vote, so let your conscience dictate your choice.
Pray to be led by the Holy Spirit for your vote.
And pray for America.
