In the Dead of Night, Congressional Democrats Pull Off Yet Another Shocker

Just when you think the corruption in our government couldn’t get any worse, the Democrats prove us wrong. Just after midnight Wednesday, March 9, the Democrats posted the Omnibus Bill on their website.

Touted as “necessary to keep the lights on,” the 1.5 trillion-dollar bill was anything but that. In their strategically devious move to hide what they were doing, the Democrats posted the bill at 12:30 a.m. to hide the fact that they had reverted to one of their favorite tactics—earmark projects. In the bill, they had inserted millions of dollars of earmarks also known as pork-barrel spending. Although the practice was banned in 2011, the Dems added 367 pages worth of unnecessary spending of our tax dollars to projects for their home states or projects to please big donors as an incentive to be re-elected.

According to Rep Marjorie Taylor-Greene (R-GA), the Democrats snuck it in during the dead of night. It was voted on and approved just two hours after it was posted—while the majority of unsuspecting Congress members were asleep:

“How Congress should work, but it doesn’t work this way since Pelosi has been speaker, is an appropriations bill, is something that every member of Congress can go and put in amendments and debate on the bill. And once it goes to the Rules Committee, that is where we can go and argue back and forth to try to put amendments and try to put changes. … In the dark of night, the Democrat-run Rules Committee met at 1:30 in the morning and by 2:30 a.m. early this morning they had passed the 1.5 trillion-dollar Omnibus bill and they released the bill text. So for all of us here in Washington, when we woke up, we found out it was too late to go in and try to put amendments in or try to argue back and try to get things removed from this horrendous 1.5 trillion dollar spending bill.” (here is the link to Rep Taylor-Greene’s explanation.)

Rep. Chuck Schumer added at least 59 earmarks totaling $80 million in just one section of the bill, transportation and housing and urban developments, and nearly $11 million added in 10 earmarks in the energy and water development section. Sen. Mike Braun (R-IN) said he counted 142 earmarks by Schumer alone.

But while the Democrats owned the dastardly deed of hiding the overspending in the bill, it was by no means only Democrats who added to the pork.

Sen. Richard Shelby (R-AL), the ranking member on the Senate Appropriations Committee, added 16 earmarks totaling nearly $650 million. And Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VA) added 79 earmarks totaling $162.2 million, according to a report from The Hill.

Oklahoma Senator Nathan Dahm, a contender for Senator Jim Inhofe’s seat when he steps down in December, is a long-time opponent of earmarks and has a plan to remove them. “I’ve seen the effects of inflation first hand. We can’t keep doing omnibus pork spending and robbing our children and grandchildren of their future by putting them further in debt,” Dahm said.

“I support federal single-subject legislation so only one topic can be dealt with (in a bill) at a time. This is in our state constitution in Oklahoma but so as far as I know, it has not been introduced at the federal level. Single-subject legislation would allow that for every 100 pages of a bill, it must be available to be read for one day. For example, a 500-page bill would have to be available to be read five days prior to a vote.” {eoa}
