Former President Donald Trump bypassed the Republican debate on Wednesday night, opting instead for an in-depth interview with Tucker Carlson that quickly racked up over 100 million views on X.

In the interview, Trump fielded questions about his absence from the debate, the potential for a civil war, and even concerns about an assassination attempt. Posted to X just five minutes before the debate started, the event’s views surpassed 180 million by Thursday morning, according to Newsweek. The current X viewership stats for the interview are over 254 million. Comparisons arose with Carlson’s recent interview of GOP candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, which drew 44 million views in a week.

Trump’s explanation for skipping the debate focused on his substantial lead in polls. “I’m leading by [40] points,” he stated, reasoning that while he enjoys answering questions, a crowded stage wouldn’t be productive. “So, I’ve taken a pass.”
