Former FBI Director James Comey

Former FBI Director James Comey has already admitted, under oath, that he purposely leaked his memos detailing his meetings with President Donald Trump for the purpose of forcing the Department of Justice to name an independent counsel.

Now, that statement could put him in prison for a very long time.

The Hill was reporting Monday morning that sources in the Department of Justice (DOJ) have reviewed the memos Comey said he handed over to a friend in academia who in turn handed them over to the liberal mainstream media at the former director’s behest. The DOJ claimed those documents contained highly classified information, and they are considered government documents.

The report states, in part:

Four of the memos had markings making clear they contained information classified at the “secret” or “confidential” level, according to officials directly familiar with the matter.

A spokesman for the FBI on Sunday declined to comment.

FBI policy forbids any agent from releasing classified information or any information from ongoing investigations or sensitive operations without prior written permission and mandates that all records created during official duties are considered to be government property.

Theft or unauthorized removal of government documents is a serious felony, but so is the leaking of classified information. Each individual offense carries a maximum of 10 years in federal prison. {eoa}
