Politician Under Attack After Proclaiming Prophetic Promises in Powerful Prayer

State Rep. Stephanie Borowicz (R) opened the Pennsylvania House on Monday with a powerful prayer that claimed many prophetic promises. However, the left is attacking Borowicz as Islamophobic because the prayer came just before the House swore in its first female Muslim member.

“At the name of Jesus, every knee will bow, and every tongue will confess, Jesus, that you are Lord,” Borowicz said in the prayer.

She also recalled the Founding Fathers in Valley Forge before acknowledging America’s growing support for Israel under Donald Trump’s leadership.

“I thought that for the most part, the entire invocation was offensive,” Democratic Rep. Movita Johnson-Harrell of Philadelphia said. “But to use Jesus as a weapon is not OK.”

She continued: “It blatantly represented the Islamophobia that exists among some leaders—leaders that are supposed to represent the people. I came to the Capitol to help build bipartisanship and collaborations regardless of race or religion to enhance the quality of life for everyone in the Commonwealth.”

Other Democratic lawmakers sided with Johnson-Harrell.

“Never have we started out with a prayer that divides us,” Democratic leader Frank Dermody said on the floor afterward. “Prayer should never divide us; it should be inspirational.”

Democrat Rep. Jordan Harris said, “I’m a Christian, and I believe in Christ. What I believe is Christ’s teaching more than anything, and His teaching would not be about, and was not about, dividing us as a people, but uniting us as a people.”

Borowicz, however, says there was nothing different about her invocation than her daily time with God.

“That’s how I pray every day. … I don’t apologize ever for praying,” she said.
