You’ve heard it. You’ve probably sung it. You may even know all the words.

But you’ve never heard it like this.

MercyMe brought its smash hit, “I Can Only Imagine,” in which songwriter and lead singer Bart Millard imagines traveling to heaven and meeting Jesus face to face, to the stage of the Grand Ole Opry earlier this month for its first live performance in more than a year.

The iconic song made history by not only achieving success on Christian radio and winning the Dove Award for Song of the Year in 2002 but also crossing over to adult contemporary radio, where it reached No. 5 on the Bilboard Adult contemporary charts. In 2018, a feature film starring J. Michael Finley and Dennis Quaid told the heartfelt story behind the song.

Millard says he wrote the song in 10 minutes, but it had been on his heart for almost 10 years.

Worship alongside the crowd at the Grand Ole Opry—and only imagine.
