‘The Bible’ Will Bring Christ’s Love to the Small Screen

Movieguide recently had the opportunity to screen some of the footage from The Bible, a 10-hour miniseries that will be shown on the History Channel. It will premeire in March and will air in two-hour increments for five straight Sundays.

From what we’ve seen so far, we can say this appears to be a truly wonderful rendition of the Bible.

Mark Burnett (Survivor, The Voice), director of the series and his wife, Roma Downey of Touched By An Angel, wanted to do the entirety of the Bible, a huge task, and this dynamic duo has done a wonderful job at achieving their grand ambition. Not every word is directly from the Bible, but Burnett did use a team of theologians to try to get accurate accounts.

Of course, the Bible is filled with pertinent themes that pertain to today just as much as when the 66 books of the Bible were written. The stories will include stories from both the Hebrew Scriptures and the New Testament documents. Hopefully, they will be able to bring the Word of God to life and help audiences understand just how real the words are and how we must learn from them for our everyday lives.

One of the messages stated repeatedly in the footage we saw is to “change the world.” This is a key message to not just the Christian community but to the world at large—we must work to change the world for Christ. The series seems to be on track for showing how incredibly powerful the Word of God really is. It was exciting to see the wonderful job the filmmakers seem to be doing.

Filming for the series was done in Morocco. The footage has a very strong desert feeling, with interesting cinematography and artistic camera setups. Burnett and Downey came across some miracles themselves while creating the Bible series. Those miracles increased their passion for doing the project, they said.

Roma will play Christ’s mother, Mary, in the New Testament segments.

Keep in mind, however, that Movieguide has only been able to take a look at segments of the series. We are anxious to see the remainder of the 10 hours when it airs on the History Channel in March.
