The Shocking Reason Liberal California’s Lawmakers Declared a Fast
Liberal California lawmakers declared a 24-hour fast after watching pastors fight for an unlikely bill.
Now, more than 100 pastors and politicians are united in prayer and fasting over raising the overtime pay for farm workers, according to the Los Angeles Times.
AB 1066 “is about the simple idea that there is a set of workers that is equal to each and every other worker in the state of California,” Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez told the LA Times.
Dozens of those involved have live-tweeted their experience through the hashtags #AB1066 and #FastForFarmworkers.
“14 hours in … I’m going to bed hungry. Made me think a lot about poverty tonight. #ab1066 #fastingforfarmworkers,” Gonzalez tweeted.
Social justice lawyer Sandra Fluke posted,”Hungry but hanging in there on the #FastForFarmworkers. Those who feed us deserve fair overtime pay! #AB1066.”
“Today I am proud to stand with fellow legislators, community leaders and activists across the country in fasting for 24 hours in support of farm workers,” youth minister Tony Thurmond wrote on Facebook. “Farm workers deserve the same overtime protections that other workers enjoy. I support AB 1066 by Assemblymember Lorena Gonzalez which would give farm workers overtime pay after eight hours. #AB1066 #FastingforFarmworkers.”
Though California still fights over religious freedoms, this campaign proves pastors and politicians can work together.
