Liquid Church ‘Pop God’ Series Taps Secular Songs

Liquid Church is working to connect the dots between chart-topping pop music and what the Bible says about the relationship between God and humanity.

The New Jersey church is setting out to teach that the same “scars of love” contemporary artists are struggling with in their lyrics echoes a storyline from the Bible. The church’s message series “Pop God” attempts to illustrate how the story of the prophet Hosea, a cheating wife and God point to a very different outcome.

“The story lines of Foo Fighters, Bruno Mars, Cee-Lo and Adele express similar burdens many people walking into church are facing in various areas of their life. We could learn a lot from the love story God’s telling that is relevant today,” says Tim Lucas, lead pastor at Liquid Church.

The four-week series connects pop song compositions to the love story told in the Old Testament. The series will feature songs like Bruno Mars’ “Just the Way You Are,” Foo Fighters’ “Walk Again,” Cee-Lo’s “Forget You,” and Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep.”

“The best part about telling this version of the love story is that people can know God has a heart which always offers grace and reconciliation,” Lucas says. “Our lives might be filled with betrayal and despair but with Him, it definitely ends with hope.”

Should churches preach using secular songs in the church?
