Francis Chan Asks Christians to Stop Relying on Him for Words From God: ‘I’m Not Your Moses’

Francis Chan rebuked Christians who rely on his teachings for divine insight, saying “I’m not your Moses” and challenging them, “Why haven’t you been with Him?” His remarks came during the pre-rally gathering for The Send, a collaborative event by multiple charismatic ministries, on Jan. 16.

Preaching at Orlando, Florida’s Church in the Son, Chan said he felt a different energy in the room in anticipation for The Send and expressed relief he was among peers, rather than people relying on him to try and bring revival to their city. After reading Exodus 19, Chan says he is used to being treated like Moses, as though he has special insight or relationship with the Lord and has to dictate God’s will to the people.

He said, “I’m used to playing the part of Moses in many churches, many conferences, many retreats, many gatherings. And the Lord revealed something to me tonight, just a couple hours ago. He said, ‘Francis, you’re not supposed to be Moses. You’re not supposed to go up on that mountaintop and have everyone go, “What’d He say?”‘ See, something happened at the crucifixion: The veil was torn.”

Chan continued, “I’m not your Moses. [You can’t ask] when I come down and say, ‘What’d He say? You’ve been with Him.’ No! Why haven’t you been with Him? I’ve been dreaming of a gathering where everyone’s been up the mountain and then we all come together.”

He said he believes The Send will be that gathering and praised the people in the room with him, including pastor and worship leader William McDowell. He also opened up about his own struggles, including how he often finds it easier to preach to a room full of Christians than to evangelize to a stranger. Watch his full remarks in this video.
