House speaker Mike Johnson is facing backlash amid his remarks about church, faith and the government during a GOP meeting.

According to Politico, Johnson gave his faith-based remarks to some GOP members in Miami. However, many believed that his messaging was centered too much on his Christian beliefs instead of government.

“I’m not at church,” one person said, calling Johnson’s speech “horrible.”

The point that Johnson was making was that when God is not the main compass of someone’s life, they will ultimately end up relying on the government to tell them how to live their lives.

The same person who spoke out about Johnson’s speech said, “I think what he was trying to do, but failed on the execution of it, was try to bring us together. The sermon was so long he couldn’t bring it back to make the point.”

Another person in attendance also criticized Johnson for spending much of the presentation time discussing history and religion to drive the point that it was up to the Republican party to save the nation.

Johnson has been upfront about his Christian faith and values the entirety of his time as Speaker of the House. Johnson was previously attacked by Rolling Stone for discussing Christian principles with Jim Garlow.

“I’m an optimist…I believe that there’s a remnant of faithful people and He’ll guide us through; I don’t think God is done with America yet,” Johnson said.

While many are averse to the combination of faith and politics mixed together, it’s clear that Johnson is using this opportunity as Speaker to share the passion he has for Jesus and what he believes God could do for our nation if we turn back toward Him. {eoa}
