Was Jack Hibbs’ Prayer at the U.S. House a Judgment Day Warning?

There’s nothing that will make a politician more squeamish than a prayer for national repentance. And that is exactly what happened when Pastor Jack Hibbs prayed before the U.S. House of Representatives.

After being endorsed as a guest chaplain by House Speaker Mike Johnson, Hibbs’ appearance at the U.S. House of Representatives proved how necessary prayer is for the collective sins of our nation, and for individual salvation.

“I ask you today Father to bring to us a great awakening of righteousness and confidence in you,” Hibbs said. “Hear my cry in this hour of great need, that we might be humbly blessed before you in the repentance of our national sins.”

Hibbs didn’t stop by praying for the sins of the nation. He continued by asking God for something most people would never dare to ask for: Fear of the Lord as our impending judgment day comes.

“Please, come upon those here who are the stewards over the business of our nation with Your wisdom…And with Your holy fear knowing that your coming day of judgment draws near, when all who have been and are now in the authority will answer to you, the great judge of heaven and of earth,” Hibbs prayed.

While this prayer for the holy fear of the Lord may be accepted by some, not all were thrilled with Hibbs’ invitation to the House.

As the Christian Post reported, House Democrats wrote a letter expressing their concerns about Hibbs’ ideological beliefs.

“Pastor Hibbs is a radical Christian Nationalist who helped fuel the January 6th insurrection and has a long record of spewing hateful vitriol toward non-Christians, immigrants, and members of the LGBTQ community,” the letter read. “He should never have been granted the right to deliver the House’s opening prayer on January 30, 2024.”

While Hibbs’ prayer of repentance and the coming judgment day may be uncomfortable for some, this does not change the reality that all of us will face God one day to give an account for the things that we did during this life (Rom. 14:12). The prayer is more of a prophetic warning and intercession that those who have not come to Christ would do so before their time on this earth ends.

Speaker Mike Johnson’s decision to invite Hibbs echoes Kent Christmas’ prophecy from last year where he prophesied that “They will allow a Spirit-filled, Holy Ghost, tongue-talking preacher to open Congress.” We must stay tuned to see how God continues to use Hibbs’ prayer and Johnson as Speaker of the House in the coming days and months. {eoa}
